What is Iyengar Yoga?

01

Iyengar Yoga is a methodical, deeply intelligent approach to yoga developed by B.K.S. Iyengar. It emphasizes precision, alignment, and the progressive sequencing of postures. Props like bricks, belts, and blankets may be used to support students of all ages and abilities, helping each person access the poses safely and fully. The practice builds strength, stamina, balance, flexibility, and clarity of mind. At Tiny Haven, we teach in the Iyengar tradition because we believe it offers a lifelong path of transformation.

What does it mean to be a Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher?

02

Certified Iyengar Yoga Teachers undergo years of rigorous training, assessment, and ongoing education. It’s much more than a 200 hour or 500 hour certification — it’s a long-term commitment to personal practice, deep study of yoga philosophy, and skilled teaching. Certification is granted by the Iyengar Yoga National Association of the United States (IYNAUS) and carries a responsibility to uphold high standards. At Tiny Haven, our teachers are committed to teaching with integrity, clarity, and care — staying true to the tradition while meeting students where they are.

Who was B.K.S. Iyengar?

03

B.K.S. Iyengar (1918–2014) was one of the most influential yoga masters of our time. Through decades of intense personal practice and teaching, he developed a system that made the transformative power of yoga accessible to people all over the world. His book Light on Yoga is considered a classic, and his legacy lives on through certified teachers, dedicated students, and the ongoing work of his family in Pune, India. His teaching continues to inspire a precise, disciplined, and heartfelt approach to yoga.

What can I expect in an Iyengar Yoga class?

04

In an Iyengar class at Tiny Haven, you can expect clear instruction, thoughtful sequencing, and individualized attention. Postures are often held a bit longer so you can explore them more deeply, and props may be used to support or refine your experience. Modifications and alternative postures are offered when needed, so students of all levels — including those working with injuries or limitations — can practice safely and effectively.

Your teacher may demonstrate a pose and ask you to observe before trying it yourself. Observation is a valuable part of learning in the Iyengar method — it helps you absorb the details and better understand the actions within the posture. The focus is on alignment, awareness, and a progressive approach to building understanding over time.

You’ll leave class feeling grounded, spacious, and more connected — to your body, your breath, and yourself.

Do you provide mats?

05

Yes, we provide all yoga props, including mats. Our mats are cleaned regularly with a natural disinfectant to ensure a clean and comfortable practice space. We kindly ask that you use the mats provided, if possible — they’re a specific size and thickness chosen to support the precision and stability needed in an Iyengar Yoga class.

What should I know about the studio?

06

Tiny Haven is, as the name suggests, a small and quiet space — we can accommodate up to 12 students per class. There’s no reception desk, but we do have a welcoming upholstered bench with cushions, along with hooks for hanging your belongings and bins for your shoes. If possible, please leave large bags at home to help us keep the space open and comfortable for everyone.

There’s a small bathroom available, though we don’t have a designated changing area. We offer filtered water and compostable cups; if you bring your own water bottle, please keep it tucked in your bag rather than on the studio floor to help prevent spills.

To preserve the calm and safety of the space, keep phones and other electronics silenced and stored in your bag — not on the floor. Please avoid bringing outside food or beverages (including coffee cups or other containers) into the studio.

And finally, we ask that you refrain from wearing perfumes, scented oils, or other fragrances, as these can linger in our yoga props and may cause discomfort for sensitive students.

What health precautions are taken?

07

We take health and cleanliness seriously at Tiny Haven. An air purifier runs during all classes, and all studio surfaces and props are cleaned regularly with natural, non-toxic products. In the bathroom, we use bleach and stronger disinfectants as needed to ensure hygiene.

If you or someone in your household is ill or experiencing symptoms, we kindly ask that you stay home. If you’re recovering from an illness but have a lingering cough, please consider wearing a mask in class out of consideration for others.

What is Momence?

08

Momence is the scheduling and registration platform we use at Tiny Haven. It’s where you’ll sign up for classes, manage your bookings, and stay connected with our schedule. Please note that in Momence all purchase options —including class packages—are called “Memberships.”

What do I need to know about
Momence?

Once you’ve created an account, you can use either the Momence app or a web browser to register for classes, join waitlists, or make changes to your schedule. The app is especially convenient — it lets you cancel a class, remove yourself from a waitlist, and see your upcoming bookings all in one place.

Should I use the Momence app or a
browser?

Both work well, but the Momence app makes it easier to manage your schedule on the go. You’ll get notifications if you move off the waitlist or if there are any last-minute updates. If you prefer not to use the app, everything can also be done through your account on the Momence website.
